Tim Winton – Miles Franklin Award 2009

The Miles Franklin Literary Award is an annual literary prize for the best Australian ‘published novel or play portraying Australian life in any of its phases’. The award was set up according to the will of Miles Franklin (1879 – 1954), who is best known for writing the Australian classic My Brilliant Career (published in 1901) and for bequeathing her estate to fund this award.  At $42,000 it is the richest literary prize in Australia. It is award to the novel of the year of ‘highest literary merit which presents Australian life in any of its phases.’

The winner of the 2009 Miles Franklin is Tim Winton’s – Breath. This is a great achievement for Tim Winton as he has won this award four times since 1984.
